A young Muslimah was getting her marriage fixed. But she sent a message to the groom to be : I must not deceive you by concealing my past, I had an affair with a boy in my neighbourhood but I broke off in a few days but now I have accepted Islamic way of life and observe hijab from all Non Mahram including my cousins. The boy got offended and he broke off the proposal after the wedding date was fixed up. The girl went through another heart break..There was another girl who used to attend college parties and she disclosed it to her husband who could not tolerate and the marraige went sour.
Let me share a few of the ettiquete of repenting
Most of us are unaware of one of the attributes of Allah, Al Ghafoor, the Oft Forgiver, one who forgives. If Allah has forgiven our sins or if we have repented for our past and corrected ourselves then it is not required to display our past sins before people, opines large number of authentic scholars. But this does not give us a licence to commit sins and then keep on hiding. True repentence is called 'toubatun nasoo' a sincere repentence. A person repents sincerly but keeps the burden of sins on his heart worrying for his plight before Allah.
Do not display your past sins proudly : I met my friend after a long time. he was into Islamic zone now for past few years. " I was a star among my classmates" he remembered with a smile," and a lot of girls chased me and blah blah blah.... This young man did not realise that he had entered the Islamic zone but continued to be proud of his past sins gleefully. This is not repentance of a true manner. Instead of being ashamed of the past sins one is seen as cherishing those sins upon recalling . One the day of Qiyamah even Adam and Ibrahim and Moses and all these mighty prophets of Allah will recall their errors and fear of facing Allah..That is a true repentance. As the Qur'an puts it : And they are never obstinate in persisting knowingly in what they have done...Surah Imram, verse 135
So when ever you recall your past sins..earnestly bring Allah to mind and ask for forgiveness for sins...and who can forgive sins except Allah... says the 134 th verse of Surah Imran
Hate the sins you have repented : Those who repents and does good deeds has truely turned to Allah with an acceptable repentance...Those who witness no false hood and if they pass by futility they pass by it with honourable avoidance.. There are some very important things mentioned in this verse.. 1. After repenting one has to do good deeds....2. If they come across any false hood (Movies, gheebah... ) they pass away with honourable avoidance, ( and not avoiding with a heavy heart).. One has to hate the sins he commited and not cherish them.
Do not despair Allah's mercy but be hopeful of being pardoned : The most positive asurance in the qur'an for sinners is : Say to my worshippers who have transgressed agaisnt their souls ! Do not despair the Mercy of Allah, for indeed, Allah forgives all the sinns collectively, He is oft forgiving and Most merciful ...Surah az Zumar vh 39 verse 53.
Surah al Qasas ch 28 verse no. 67, assures of hope.....Who ever has repented and believed and worked rigteousness wlll have hopes to be among those who achieve salvation...
