Deviation through Extremism

Abdul Qadir Jilani in his book ‘Gunyetut Talibeen’ has mentioned the names of 72 sects that prevailed amongst the Muslims. He wrote it some few centuries ago. Today these sects have branched into 100 plus sub sects. Many of them still persistently keep moving among the Ummah in different forms and keep engulfing a large number of Muslims unaware of the corrupt creed that it offers. The Khwarij are one among them. They were the first to deviate from mainstream Islam and not a single companion of the Prophet was among them.
Khwarij is plural of kharjee. Kharjee means one who is out. In shariah terminology “ one who goes out of Islam” The difference between a murtad and kharjee is, the murtad chooses to walk out of Islam where as the Kharjee is out of Islam but still thinks that he is a Muslim while the rest who do not agree with him are out of Islam.
The first Kharjee emerged during the life of the Prophet (pbuh) when a man with his cheeks deep inside and his eyes sunk in walked up to the Prophet and said “ Fear Allah!” Umar bin Al Khattab wanted to kill him instantly, but the Messenger of Allah stopped him saying” don’t; do it other wise people will say” Muhammed (pbuh)has started killing his own people….The Prophet (pbuh)then looking at the man , predicted that from his people would be those who will go out of Islam like an arrow goes out of a bow, their good deeds will amaze you and put you into wonder.
These were the people who caused a dissension during the Khilafat of Uthman bib Affan r.a. that lead to his assassination. Later during the rein of Ali bin Abi Talib the Khawareej killed many companions of the Prophet (pbuh) like Ammar bin Yasser and Ali bin Abi Talib. Extremism in creed led them to hatred of main stream Muslims and caused the killings of thousands of Muslim warriors, many of them so strong that one of them could hold a buffalo by its tail and flung it hundreds of meters far. It is a painful to access the unimaginable loss to the Muslims by fanatics.
The Khawarij used textual evidence (Qur’an) to prove their point but they misunderstood the verses widely. This shows that just enthusiasm is not enough but correct understanding of Qur’an according to the best generation of Muslims is essential. The Khawarij indulged in Takfeerextensively. Takfeer means to declare a Muslim to be a disbeliever. This is how their belief went: If a Muslim commits a major sin (adultery, lying etc.) then he will burn in hellfire for ever.!!!! They declared the three stalwarts of Islam namely Ali, Muawiya and Amr Bin Al-A’s (Allah be please with them)to be out of. Some other day I will write in detail about the martydom of Uthman and Ali (r.a.) Insha Allah, as to how the Muslims lost their two strong khalifa due to extremism.
Even today some groups have the temperament of Takfeer. Muslims should be aware of any body who comes to youto teach your religion, as Abdullah ibn Abbas adviced: Be cautious from whom you take deen, because your Akhera is associated with it. Have you noticed what the Qur'an says in Surah Nisa ch 4, verse 171: O people of the Book do not go excess in your Religion......The same lesson explained by our beloved Prophet (pbuh): Beware of Extremism, Beware of Extremism, Beware of Extremism, for verity Extremism will perish... Sahih Al Bukhari, Kitabul Imaan
